10:58 AM: A person who was found engulfed in flames at a gas station in San Francisco’s Sunset District at about 3:30 a.m. today has died, a San Francisco Police Department sergeant said.

A gas station attendant on 19th Avenue near Taraval Street waived down a police officer, Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said. The officer, who was returning to his station nearby, had already seen that someone was on fire at the gas station.

The officer and the attendant attempted to put out the fire, she said.

Firefighters with the San Francisco Fire Department responded and put it out. An arson inspector and the medical examiner also responded. The male victim’s identification has not been released pending notification of next of kin, Tomioka said.

An arson investigator and the medical examiner are continuing to investigate the fire.

7:55 AM: A person was found on fire in San Francisco’s Taraval District at 3:30 a.m. today, according to San Francisco police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka.

It’s unclear whether the fire was intentional.

The person’s condition also was unavailable.
