9/11 1:38 PM: A 51-year-old man is in custody today for allegedly fatally stabbing another man during an argument Thursday at a residential hotel in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District where they both lived.

The victim was identified by the medical examiner’s office as 37-year-old John Montgomery, who lived at the Vincent Hotel at 459 Turk St.

The stabbing occurred inside the hotel at about 12:30 p.m., according to police.

Montgomery was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he died a short time later.

Alex Herrera, another hotel resident, was arrested a block-and-a-half away from the hotel, about 10 minutes after the stabbing, according to police spokesman Sgt. Wilfred Williams.

“He had left the scene but he was detained by hotel staff, until police arrived,” Williams said.

Herrera didn’t have a weapon on him when he was arrested, and Williams would not confirm whether a weapon had been found at the hotel.

Williams said the two men, who lived in separate units at the hotel, had argued before the stabbing occurred. He declined to speculate on the cause.

The Vincent Hotel provides 103 units of housing for San Francisco’s homeless population and is run by the Tenderloin Housing Clinic.

The homicide is the 34th reported this year by San Francisco police.
