I like to read the Chronicle’s letters to the editor, even though they don’t feel as fun online (not so unfun that I think a news organization should spend zillions of dollars on printing presses, but that’s a whole other conversation, isn’t it?). There was this one today, from Ray Byram of San Francisco. He writes in a response to an earlier letter, about all the crap littering our streets. He says, in part:
It’s also time to address light-duty trash. By that I mean the countless flyers for fast food, all manner of takeout and pizza that are attached to every door, banister, garage door handle and wiper blade in the city, sometimes daily.
Hey, Ray, we feel the same way! Then we found out that, per SF Public Works,
No distribution if “no handbills” sign: No person may distribute any Handbill on private property in the City when the premises has been posted in a conspicuous way with notice stating “No Handbills” or the like unless has the written permission of the occupant.
We’re (unfortunately) not getting a dime from Cole Hardware to tell you that they sell some very attractive no handbill signs you can post on your house/apartment/and perhaps even car.
But, what’s a sign gonna do? We called DPW, and they told us this: if you post the sign, and you still get shit left, call (say it with us) 311 with the name of the offending party and they will apparently rain all sorts of hellfire upon them. More precisely, they’ll get a written warning, and then a fine.
If anybody knows Ray Byram, tip him off, OK?
