handcuffs.JPGSan Francisco police will conduct DUI checkpoints throughout the city tonight and early Sunday morning to increase safety and educate the public on the dangers of drunken driving.

The citywide DUI checkpoint patrols will be held between 7 p.m. today and 3 a.m. Sunday.

Police said the checkpoints not only aim to crack down on drunken drivers but to educate motorists on the dangers of driving while impaired and to encourage sober designated drivers.

The operation is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
