Man Turns Himself In For East Oakland Murder Last Week

A day after a fatal shooting in East Oakland last week, a suspect walked into the Oakland police downtown headquarters and turned himself in, according to court records.

Randy Escalante, 21, surrendered for the Feb. 15 shooting of Jonathan Sanchez in the 500 block of Catron Drive, according to police. Sanchez arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds at about 4:20 p.m. that day and died a short time later.

Escalante fled the shooting scene but just before 8 p.m. Tuesday, he walked into the Police Department headquarters on Seventh Street, surrendered and requested a lawyer. He has been charged with murder and assault with a firearm, according to court documents.

He remains in Santa Rita Jail without bail. Escalante is next set to appear in court on March 14 to enter a plea in the case, according to jail records.

Police did not disclose any suspected motive for the shooting.
