A high-speed chase over the Bay Bridge ended this morning when the driver crashed into a San Francisco fire hydrant and slipped on the wet pavement as she tried to run, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Hayward CHP officers first spotted the 28-year-old woman weaving in an Infinity G35 on Interstate Highway 880 in San Leandro at about 2:45 a.m., CHP Officer Vu Williams said.
The officers tried to pull her over but she took off, driving into Oakland and getting onto Interstate Highway 80 heading east, then turning around and going the other direction, Williams said.
During the pursuit she reached speeds of more than 100 mph.
She headed over the Bay Bridge into San Francisco and got out at the Fremont Street exit and then drove onto Market Street. Once on Market Street, the Infiniti ran out of gas and she jumped out of the still-moving car as it crashed into a fire hydrant.
The fire hydrant was sheared, sending a plume of water in the air. As the woman tried to escape, she slipped and fell on the wet pavement, Williams said.
Officers caught up with her and took her into custody. She was not injured and was booked into jail on suspicion of recklessly evading police and driving without a license, Williams said.
Her name has not been released.
