Bicyclist Seriously Injured in Collision with Car in Western Addition

A bicyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a car in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood on Wednesday evening, according to police.

The collision was reported at 6:44 p.m. at Divisadero Street and Golden Gate Avenue.

The vehicle was making a right turn on a green light when the 31-year-old male bicyclist tried to overtake the car on the right and struck the car’s mirror. The cyclist fell to the ground and hit his head on the concrete, police said.

He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for head trauma that is considered life-threatening, according to police.

The car’s driver was not arrested in connection with the collision, police said.

Did he try to overtake the car, or did the car speed up, pass him, and then begin a turn across his path?

    Usually it’s the latter.

Key question is if the turn signal was on. If not, the car driver should have been arrested. If so, the bicyclist is a moron.

True, but even if there’s video that would clearly show this, SFPD wouldn’t do anything, because they’d have to have had an officer see it in person in order to pursue any traffic violations or criminal charges. I’d like to see SFPD using video to enforce our traffic laws.

I believe that is no longer the policy of SFPD (although it certainly used to be). I believe that officially changed in early 2014 as a result of the whole Vision Zero movement. However, we’ve seen from multiple incidents since that change that SFPD will look for every possible reason to blame a cyclist/pedestrian and let the car driver off the hook. And then there is of course the issue of the DA refusing to take on seemingly open and shut cases.

Either the Bike Person did not follow the rules or the Driver did not.

i hope he had a helmet on . if note, just another example of why that should be required by law
