An off-duty Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy who was attending a San Francisco Giants game at AT&T Park as part of the team’s law enforcement appreciation night on Tuesday helped detain a man suspected of stabbing another man near the ballpark, a San Francisco police spokeswoman said.
At about 9 p.m. Tuesday, a fight broke out between two men near the intersection of Terry A. Francois Boulevard and Third Street in the Mission Bay neighborhood, just south of McCovey Cove and China Basin Park, according to police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan, who also was in attendance at the game.
Witnesses saw the suspect take out a knife and stab the victim at least once in the arm. The witnesses reported the fight to police and saw the suspect flee the intersection.
The victim, a 52-year-old man, was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Gatpandan said.
The off-duty Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy saw the suspect and detained him in a walkway just off Berry Street until San Francisco police officers arrived, Gatpandan said.
The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Rodney Allen, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into county jail.
Gatpandan said that as she left the game, she saw blood on the sidewalk where the victim had been stabbed.
