Man Killed by AK-47 Gunfire in Bayview Identified

A San Francisco man fatally shot by suspects allegedly armed with an AK-47 rifle in the city’s Bayview District on Sunday night has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as 53-year-old James Collins.

San Francisco police initially said the victim was a 63-year-old man, but the medical examiner’s office confirmed today that Collins was 53.

Police said it appears Collins was at the intersection of Third Street and La Salle Avenue around 10:40 p.m. Sunday when he was shot.

Collins was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The suspects are believed to be two males, but officers have not identified or arrested either suspect.

The motive for the homicide remains under investigation and police have not said whether the victim knew the suspects.

Police said Collins was hit with gunfire from an AK-47 rifle but have not said whether they have located the weapon.
