Man Suffers Serious Injuries in Shooting on Muni Light-rail in Bayview

A 20-year-old San Francisco man was shot in his upper body by an unknown suspect on a San Francisco Municipal Railway light-rail vehicle in the city’s Bayview District this afternoon, a police spokesman said.

Officers received a report of a shooting on a T-Third light-rail vehicle in transit on Third Street, heading south between Oakdale and Palou avenues at about 12:21 p.m., according to San Francisco police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi.

The suspect fired at least one shot at the victim and struck him in the upper body, Manfredi said.

Muni spokesman Paul Rose said the shooting suspect and victim were both passengers on the Muni vehicle.

Manfredi said the male suspect fled the light-rail vehicle into a busy intersection and has not been identified or arrested as of this evening.

The victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries via ambulance, according to Manfredi.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Manfredi said police investigators are reviewing the Muni vehicle’s video surveillance footage for further information about the suspect.

Officers are asking anyone who may have pertinent information about the shooting or the suspect to call the San Francisco Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to 847411 with “SFPD” followed by the body of the message.
