Periodic closures of San Francisco’s Van Ness Avenue for the construction of a new California Pacific Medical Center campus will begin tonight and continue through September.
Traffic will be restricted between Geary and Post streets for the construction of a 124-foot-long pedestrian tunnel. The tunnel will connect the planned 274-bed hospital with a medical office building across the street, according to officials with HerreroBOLDT, the general contractor working on the new campus.
There will be a partial closure starting tonight at 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. Tuesday and then on Tuesday and Wednesday nights as well. Van Ness Avenue will be entirely closed this weekend, as well as the weekends of April 24 and Sept. 5 for 72 hours each.
The construction schedule was determined in consultation with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Caltrans to have the least impact on neighbors and businesses in the area, HerreroBOLDT officials said.
Van Ness will remain closed to most drivers during these periods, but city buses and emergency vehicles will still be permitted. Pedestrians will have access along one side of Van Ness.
Construction of the new CPMC facilities is expected to wrap up in 2018 and the hospital will open for patient care in 2019, Sutter Health officials said. The hospital will house women’s, children’s, cardiology, oncology, transplant and emergency care departments.
