Jogger Fatally Struck by Golden Gate Transit Bus Identified

A jogger fatally struck by a Golden Gate Transit bus at the intersection of two main thoroughfares in San Francisco has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as 51-year-old Lori Helmer.

Helmer, a San Francisco resident, was struck at about 6:15 a.m. at the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and Lombard Street, police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.

Helmer was struck by a Golden Gate Transit bus heading east on Lombard and turning left onto Van Ness, Shyy said. She was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead later this morning.

Shyy said he did not know if the jogger was in a crosswalk when she was struck. Investigators will be reviewing video surveillance footage from aboard the bus that they hope will help determine the cause of the collision, he said.

Golden Gate Transit spokeswoman Priya Clemens said the driver of the bus that struck Helmer was “obviously shaken up” after the collision.

Clemens said the driver is one of the agency’s “most senior drivers with an excellent safety record.”
