50th Annual Rolex Big Boat Series Kicks Off Today

Dozens of sailboats are streaking across San Francisco Bay today competing in the first of four days of the Rolex Big Boat Series.

The 50th annual sailing regatta, based out of San Francisco’s St. Francis Yacht Club, consists of seven races over four days.

Entrants in the competition include about 100 sailboats ranging from 24 feet to 54 feet in length and hail from as far as away as Japan, Turkey and Australia.

The title sponsor will award custom-engraved Rolex watches to the winners.

So far today, one competing boat, described as a Melges 24, has lost its mast and was towed to land at about 3:20 p.m. this afternoon, event organizers shared via Twitter.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco did not respond to the incident and reported that a commercial salvage company would be responsible for towing the vessel.
