Six people in a canoe that capsized near the Golden Gate Bridge this afternoon had been participating in the “Round the Rock Alcatraz Challenge,” according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Around 3 p.m., the Coast Guard responded to a report from a good Samaritan of the capsized outrigger canoe near the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, Coast Guard Petty Officer Bob Egbert said.
The good Samaritan who was on a sailing vessel saved two people while crew members from a 47-foot Coast Guard motor lifeboat rescued the other four, according to Coast Guard officials said.
The six people on the canoe were transported to the Coast Guard’s Station Golden Gate in Sausalito, Coast Guard officials said.
They were taken to emergency technicians and reported to be in stable condition, according to Coast Guard officials said.
The annual “Round the Rock” challenge consists of two courses between the Golden Gate and San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridges hosted by the He’e Nalu Marin-Sonoma Outrigger Canoe Club.
