Man Sprayed With Caustic Chemicals During Pier 39 Mugging

A man was sprayed with chemicals in a robbery early Saturday morning near San Francisco’s Pier 39, police said today.

The incident was reported around 2:30 a.m. Saturday near Bay and Kearny streets, police said.

A 59-year-old man was sitting on the sidewalk when a man, believed to be between 30 and 35 years old, came up and sprayed the victim with an unknown caustic chemical from an aerosol bottle, police said.

The suspect took the victim’s blue duffel bag and fled on a dark-colored bicycle, police said.

The victim was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.

Police had not caught the robber as of this morning.
