The Bay Area has seen record temperatures Wednesday and today, but the heat wave is expected to break Friday and cool down considerably this weekend, a National Weather Service forecaster said today.
Temperatures are expected to hit 87 in San Francisco today, but will cool to a high of 71 Friday and only 60 on Saturday, forecaster Diana Henderson said.
The record for this day in previous years in San Francisco is 88 degrees, so if today is warmer than expected ,it could break the record, Henderson said.
Other cities in the area are expecting similarly high temperatures today, including 90 degrees in Oakland, 93 in Pleasanton, 93 in Walnut Creek and 95 in Morgan Hill.
Wednesday’s heat broke or tied several records. San Francisco International Airport’s 90-degree high tied the record set on that day in 1996, Salinas also tied the 1996 record and King City broke it with a 97-degree high.
Public safety officials have reminded residents to be careful in the heat and check the back seat of their cars—particularly if they have dogs or small children.
The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health reminded employers Wednesday that state regulations require providing fresh water, shaded areas and preparing an emergency heat illness prevention plan for outdoor workers.
The agency is inspecting agricultural, construction, landscaping and other outdoor worksites for compliance, Cal/OSHA officials said.
