Don’t Forget: San Francisco Stretch Of 280 To Close Thursday Night

Southbound Interstate Highway 280 will close in San Francisco during the Memorial Day weekend to allow work on the freeway viaduct, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The closure, which extends from 6th Street to U.S. Highway 101 will start Thursday at 9 p.m. and continue through Tuesday morning at 5 a.m., and affects only southbound traffic, according to CHP Officer Daniel Hill.

Traffic leaving downtown San Francisco and areas including AT&T Park will be affected and visitors are encouraged to use public transportation where possible, Hill said.

The closure will allow a contractor to replace bridge hinges on the Southern Freeway Viaduct in the city. The hinges allow the bridge to accommodate expansion and contraction, as well as the movement caused by an earthquake.
