Armed Suspect Surrenders After Mission Standoff

11:59 AM 5/29: Police have named a man who allegedly robbed someone at gunpoint before holing up in a home in San Francisco’s Mission District on Wednesday afternoon.

Candido Rivas, 25, of San Francisco, was arrested after a report of an armed robbery around 4:40 p.m. at Shotwell and 23rd streets, police said.

Police responded to the area, where a victim had been robbed at gunpoint, and Rivas allegedly ran into a home on Shotwell Street, police said.

Streets in the area were shut down and SWAT team members and crisis negotiators arrived, according to police.

Rivas later that night was taken into custody on suspicion of robbery, weapons violations, parole violations, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, possessing a weapon as a convicted felon and a gang enhancement, among other charges, police said.

There were no hostages taken and no shots were fired while Rivas was barricaded in the home, police said.

According to San Francisco sheriff’s officials, he is being held on no bail.

10:24 PM 5/28: San Francisco police have taken one person into custody this evening following a standoff with an armed suspect who barricaded himself into a Mission District home.

Police were called to Shotwell and 23rd streets around 4:40 p.m. on a report of a robbery suspect barricaded into a home, according to Officer Albie Esparza.

A victim had been robbed by the suspect at gunpoint, before the suspect ran into a home on Shotwell Street.

Police shut down streets in the area and SWAT teams and negotiators were called in to assist.

There were no hostages taken or any shots fired in the incident, Esparza said.
