Toddler Dies Of Injuries Sustained In Wednesday Morning House Fire

4:24 PM: Two people killed in a one-alarm fire at a home in San Francisco’s Sunnydale neighborhood this morning have been identified as a mother and her 3-year-old-son, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Ester Ioane, 32, and her son William Santana were killed in the fire, which was reported at 9:54 a.m. in a two-story building at 76 Brookdale Ave.

The blaze was controlled at 10:20 a.m., fire officials said.

Ioane was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered in the blaze. William was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries there, fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

Fire officials had initially reported that two people died in the blaze, but have since clarified that there was only one fatality and that another person was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

There were reports of other residents jumping out of the windows to escape the flames and smoke that broke out on the first floor of the home, fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
