Balboa Park BART Station Reopens Following Fatality On Tracks

6:47 PM: The Balboa Park BART station in San Francisco has reopened this evening after a fatality was reported on the tracks, prompting major delays throughout the Bay Area.

The incident was reported at 4:35 p.m. when a person was reportedly under a train, BART spokesman Jim Allison said. That person was pronounced dead and the San Francisco medical examiner responded to the scene.

Trains were not stopping at the Balboa Park BART station for nearly two hours following the incident.

The Balboa Park BART station was reopened at about 6:20 p.m., Allison said, and trains are resuming normal service.

Riders can expect residual delays, according to Allison, but those delays should resolve themselves by about 7 p.m.

The person’s death remains an ongoing BART police investigation, Allison said.

5:56 PM: Firefighters are continuing the battle a massive blaze burning at a building under construction in San Francisco this evening that has reached five alarms, a fire dispatcher said.

The blaze was reported at 4:56 p.m. at Fourth and China Basin streets, according to the dispatcher.

The fire is burning at a building under construction located across the street from the Strata at Mission Bay apartments, according to a spokeswoman for Sares Regis, which manages that property.

The property that is burning does not belong to the nearby University of California at San Francisco, a UCSF spokeswoman said.

5:34 PM: The San Francisco medical examiner has been called to the Balboa Park station this afternoon after a person was reported under a train, according to a BART spokesperson.

Trains are single-tracking through the Balboa Park station while officials respond to the incident, which was reported at 4:35 p.m., BART spokesman Jim Allison said.

East Bay trains are being given priority but all trains are traveling through the Balboa Park station without stopping, Allison said.

BART is experiencing major delays on all lines that pass through San Francisco as a result of the incident.

Allison said no information is available yet on the individual reported under the train.
