Trains Back In Service, No Signs Of Foul Play In Late-Night Death On BART Tracks

8:09 AM: BART trains are running again between the Fremont and South Hayward stations after a major disruption overnight and early this morning caused by a death on the tracks.

A Richmond-bound train hit a person on the tracks just south of the South Hayward station at about 11:25 p.m. Tuesday, BART spokesman Jim Allison said.

The person died at the scene. It is unknown what the person was doing on the tracks at the time of the incident, according to Allison.

He said the person was a trespasser, and not a BART employee.

The riders on the train involved in the incident were transferred to another train, and service was stopped in both directions south of the Hayward station.

The tracks reopened and trains began running again at 7:50 a.m., Allison said. He said service is expected to be back to normal by about 8:30 a.m.

“We have trains staged and ready for the commute,” he said.

Allison said the death occurred in a dark, remote area and BART investigators wanted to wait until daylight to clear the scene to ensure they had collected all of the evidence.

He said the case is considered an “unattended death” because there were no witnesses, but he noted that there is no indication of foul play.

An unrelated track issue caused delays between the Hayward and Bay Fair stations this morning.
