Streets Reopen After SOMA Gas Main Break

12:36 AM: A gas leak in San Francisco’s South Park neighborhood briefly caused street closures and evacuations this morning, a PG&E spokesman said.

The leak occurred near Third Street and Jack London Alley.

A third-party construction crew working in the area dropped a pipe on a gas main, rupturing it, at about 9 a.m., San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

PG&E crews responded stopped the flow of gas at about 9:50 a.m., PG&E spokesman Jason King said.

Streets in the area were shut down and nearby homes and businesses were evacuated as PG&E crews worked to cap the leak.

An employee at The Butler and the Chef at 155 S. Park Ave. said the eatery was closed for about an hour and workers and customers were evacuated. The eatery reopened around 10 a.m., she said.
