A report of a gas odor prompted the evacuation of a school in San Francisco’s Portola District this afternoon but ultimately proved to be without merit, a PG&E spokesman said.

PG&E crews responded to a report at 2:17 p.m. of a possible gas leak near San Bruno and Silver avenues but did not find any leak, utility spokesman Jason King said.

As a precaution, nearby Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School at Girard and Burrows streets was evacuated, but the evacuation order was lifted at about 3:20 p.m., King said.

Another nearby school was also briefly evacuated, he said.

King said PG&E crews were deactivating a pipe nearby that may have caused a gas odor in the area, but “there was never a leak and it was never unsafe in any way.”
