Teen Arrested For Bringing Sawed-Off Rifle To School

A 16-year-old student was arrested for bringing a sawed-off rifle to a high school in San Francisco’s Portola District on Tuesday, police said.

At about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to a report that a firearm had been found at Phillip & Sala Burton Academic High School, located at 400 Mansell St., police said.

According to police, a school staff member noticed an unattended backpack in the school’s wellness center. When he picked up the bag he felt an unusual item inside. Upon opening the backpack, he found a loaded sawed-off rifle and ammunition inside.

The school staff member notified the school’s dean as well as police immediately after locating the weapon, officers said.

The bag contained personal property belonging to a 16-year-old student at the school, police said.

The suspect was pulled out of his class. He admitted that he was the owner of the backpack with the rifle inside, police said.

The suspect was arrested and booked into juvenile hall on multiple weapons related charges, according to police.
