The Oakland Zoo was briefly advised by police to go on lockdown this afternoon because of a suspect search in the area, a zoo spokeswoman said.
Police told zoo officials a suspect or victim from an altercation at a gas station near the zoo, which is located at 9777 Golf Links Road, had possibly come onto the zoo property shortly after 3 p.m., zoo spokeswoman Nicky Mora said.
Police thought the suspect might have jumped the fence so zoo staff allowed officers to search the property and advised visitors about the lockdown, Mora said.
However, no suspects were found at the zoo and just before 4 p.m. police gave the “all-clear,” she said.
The zoo closed at 4 p.m. and Mora said there were few visitors when the police activity began. No visitors, staff or animals were harmed during the suspect search, she said.
Oakland police were not immediately available to comment on the incident.
