11:38 AM: A report to a U.S. Coast Guard dispatcher this morning of a capsized boat with people in the water near Fort Funston/Golden Gate National Recreation Area outside San Francisco turned out to be a false alarm, a Coast Guard officer said.
A person on shore off of Fort Funston called the California Highway Patrol about seeing a capsized boat and four people in the water and the CHP notified the Coast Guard at 9:10 a.m., Lt. Joshua Dykman said.
The Coast Guard dispatched a 47-foot cutter boat and helicopter to the scene but discovered that the boat in question was conducting diving operations near several buoys and had not capsized, Dykman said.
The person who called the CHP apparently mistook the floating buoys for people, Dykman said,
The Coast Guard had to react to the report based on the call from the CHP, Dykman said.
“If we get a report about something like that and it comes from somebody we consider a legitimate source, we will go out and confirm that, to make sure it is what it is,” Dykman said.
10:06 AM: Four people fell into the water this morning after a 25-foot fishing boat capsized in the Pacific Ocean near the Fort Funston/Golden Gate National Recreation Area, according to a dispatcher for the U.S. Coast Guard.
A call came in at about 9:10 a.m. about a boat that had capsized near Fort Funston, the dispatcher said.
Search and rescue crews are working on picking the people up, the dispatcher said.
