49ers Game Tragedy: Man Dies Of Fall

9/9 10:18 AM: A man who died outside Candlestick Park at the start of the San Francisco 49ers game on Sunday afternoon has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as 32-year-old Hayward resident Kevin Hayes.

Hayes fell shortly before 1:30 p.m., just after kickoff, while he was walking with his brother on the Jamestown pedestrian walkway, police said.

A police lieutenant at the Bayview Station said the elevated walkway crosses over Jamestown Avenue at Harney Way to allow fans to access the stadium without walking through traffic.

Multiple witnesses said Hayes appeared to be intoxicated prior to the fall, according to police.

The 49ers won Sunday’s season opener, defeating the Green Bay Packers 34-28.
