San Francisco police evacuated a building in the South of Market neighborhood this afternoon because of a suspicious package found in the area.

The package was reported at 3:50 p.m. in the 400 block of Third Street, police said.

Officers evacuated the building where the package was found and issued a shelter-in-place order to the surrounding buildings.

The police bomb squad responded and determined the package was not hazardous, police said.
