The Hot Flashes – Kabuki
It’s like that movie — Old Hogs? Old Dogs? You know, the one with Tim Allen and John Travolta and they’re hella elderly and they ride motorcycles — it’s like that, but with women and basketball. THAT SAID, the cast is amazing — Wanda Sykes, Daryl Hannah, Virginia Madsen — and I love a cheesy-as-hell movie starring sassy olds. This looks like it could’ve easily come out in the 80s starring Bette Midler and Shelley Long. I’m about it!
20 Feet From Stardom – Everywhere
Documentary about famous backup singers — they’ve got dreams, too! These women can sing, and if you like singing, you will probably love this. Also, Bette Midler’s in it — and that makes her our Weekend Watch celebrity of the week!
Pacific Rim – Everywhere
Here’s the gist of Guillermo del Toro’s latest: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. Here’s why you’ll be seeing it: DID YOU JUST READ THAT DESCRIPTION? That’s right — I’ll see you at the movies.
Fruitvale Station – Metreon
Uh, what else to say but maybe bring all the tissues in your house and maybe an extra absorbent sweater to sob into? This is a movie about Oscar Grant’s last day on earth, which culminates in him being shot by a BART cop at Oakland’s Fruitvale station. If you want to cry and cry about how fucked humanity is, and how shitty we are to young black men, this will be a satisfying, gut-wrenching experience. Rain recommends it, here’s her review.
Peaches Christ Productions Proudly Presents The Craft – Castro, Saturday only
It’s a special screening of The Craft, with a magical and mystifying pre-show starring Peaches and some of our RuPaul’s Drag Race favorites: Alaska Thunderfuck, Sharon Needles, and San Francisco’s own Honey Mahogany. It will be a truly spooktacular mid-Summer conjuring, and you’d have to perform some black magic on me to miss it.
