San Francisco is going blue to get green.

The city’s Recreation and Park Department is holding a family-friendly environmental cleanup event today at Golden Gate Park’s Stow Lake, featuring blue Smurf characters.

The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon, is part of an “America the Bluetiful” nationwide campaign leading up to the release of the film “The Smurfs 2,” which opens in theaters on July 31.

Smurf characters are at the site helping with the cleanup and handing out giveaways to participants. Children will be able to meet the Smurfs and learn about the importance of recycling and other environmental concepts.

Park officials said Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation is organizing a nationwide series of “America the Bluetiful” events.
