SF Giants Pitcher Facing “open and gross lewdness” Charges After Las Vegas Disturbance

5:33 PM: San Francisco Giants pitcher Chad Gaudin was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor open and gross lewdness in Las Vegas in January, police said today.

Gaudin, 30, was arrested on Jan. 27 at an area hospital after officers responded and received multiple witness statements about his alleged lewd conduct, Las Vegas Metropolitan police spokesman Officer Jose Hernandez said today.

He is accused of fondling a hospital patient’s breast, according to a criminal complaint filed in court earlier this month when he was charged with the misdemeanor.

He posted $2,000 bail after the arrest and was released. The case is expected to return to Las Vegas Township Justice Court on July 23 for a status report, according to court records.

Gaudin’s attorney Dominic Gentile released a statement this afternoon saying that Gaudin was examined in the emergency room of the hospital on Jan. 27 “while experiencing symptoms believed to be related to acute renal failure due to a condition known as rhabdomyolysis.”

Gentile said symptoms of the condition include confusion, dehydration and loss of orientation and consciousness.

“Although he has been accused of improperly touching another hospital patient while on the premises that night, there are differing and exonerating versions of what occurred that were reported by eyewitnesses,” Gentile said in the statement.

“Mr. Gaudin denies any unlawful conduct and has been cooperating with the authorities,” he said. “I am confident that this matter will be resolved in his favor and because it is pending in court there will be no further comment.”

A Giants team spokeswoman was not immediately available this afternoon to comment on the case.

Gaudin is 2-1 with a 2.44 ERA in 59 innings this season for the Giants.

Reports of the arrest are the latest bad news for the defending World Series champions, who lost 7-2 today to the New York Mets, have lost 16 of their past 19 games and are in last place in the National League West division.
