A motorcyclist died at a hospital Monday night after he ran into a road sign in the Marin Headlands, a fire captain said.

The accident happened at about 8:30 p.m. on Conzelman Road near the southbound approach to the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin County Fire Protection District Capt. Mike Martinez said.

The rider, who was in his late 30s or early 40s, was speeding downhill toward the highway and passing cars when he went off the roadway and hit a large road sign about 200 yards from the bridge entrance, Martinez said.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and was found about 10 or 15 feet down a hillside, Martinez said.
A National Park Service ranger and a bystander were giving the man CPR when Southern Marin Fire Protection District paramedics arrived, Martinez said.

The motorcyclist was taken to Marin General Hospital where he died about an hour later.
