Emergency March Called In Mission District To Protest George Zimmerman Murder Trial Verdict

9:54 PM: San Francisco police confirm there is a group of protestors at 24th and Mission streets responding to the “not guilty” verdict announced today in the George Zimmerman trial.

Police had anticipated potential protests related to the verdict and had resources in place this weekend, according to Officer Gordon Shyy.

“As always we will facilitate citizens first amendment rights as long as they are peaceful,” Shyy said in a statement.

The Mission District march was called this evening by the ANSWER Coalition and the Party for Socialism and Liberation after Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman, 29, shot Martin, 17, on Feb. 26th, 2012 in Sanford, Florida. A neighborhood watch coordinator, Zimmerman argued the shooting, which sparked national controversy, was in self-defense.

Similar protests are being reported in other cities including Oakland. Oakland police have not yet responded to calls for comment.
