A Marin County woman gave birth to a girl on the side of southbound U.S. Highway 101 on Thursday night, a fire captain said today.

Larkspur fire Capt. Mike Parker said the woman and her husband were driving in a Nissan SUV to a San Francisco hospital around 8 p.m. when their daughter changed their plans.

The husband pulled the car over near the Lucky Drive exit, Parker said.

When Larkspur and Corte Madera fire crews arrived, the mother was sitting in the passenger seat with the baby wrapped in a sweater and blanket in her lap, Parker said.

The baby was fine and moving around, Parker said.

“They (the parents) seemed stunned and in shock,” he said.

The 39-year-old mother, the father and baby were driven to Marin General Hospital in an ambulance while fire crews took their car to the hospital, Parker said.

The couple is believed to be San Rafael residents and the baby is their second child, according to Parker.
