A San Francisco police officer fatally shot an armed man suspected of stabbing his brother-in-law in the city’s Potrero Hill neighborhood Wednesday night, police said.
At about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday, police received an emergency call from a man in the 900 block of DeHaro Street who said he had stabbed his brother-in-law, according to police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza.
During the emergency call, another voice was heard yelling for help in the background, police said.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers located a man with multiple stab wounds to his head, arms and chest.
As officers went to assist the victim, a man came toward the officers armed with a raised hammer, according to Esparza.
Officers instructed the man to drop the weapon but he refused to obey the officers’ commands.
Fearing for his safety and the safety of the other officers, one officer discharged his firearm and struck the suspect, Esparza said.
Both the suspect and the victim were transported to San Francisco General Hospital, according to Esparza.
The suspect died of his injuries at the hospital and the victim sustained life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the victim is conscious and able to communicate with police officers and the hospital staff.
A machete was located near the scene of the stabbing, police said.
