A portion of San Francisco’s Great Highway was shut down this morning because of sand blown onto the roadway, a Department of Public Works spokeswoman said.

Southbound lanes between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard were shut down around 9 a.m. for sand removal, spokeswoman Rachel Gordon said.

Northbound lanes remain open.

The stretch is expected to reopen later this afternoon, Gordon said.

She said windy conditions have caused several closures on the road in the past few days.
