The Lowell High School track team will be wearing black ribbons at their next meet to honor one of their teammates who was killed in an apparent drunken driving accident in San Francisco over the weekend.
Henren Chang, 17, a San Francisco resident, was struck and killed while walking north across Sloat Boulevard at Vale Avenue around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, San Francisco police said.
Her track coach, Andy Leong, said Chang was a junior at Lowell High School, located at 1101 Eucalyptus Drive, who was running for her first season.
“I was excited to see what she was going to do,” Leong said. “She was working hard.”
She was scheduled to compete in her first meet later this week.
She had started practicing with the team in January.
Leong said Chang had run on the school’s cross-country team previously, and was working on long-distance track running.
The coach said Chang’s boyfriend is on the track team, and he called the coach to tell him the news of Chang’s death.
“He’s taking it pretty hard,” Leong said.
Leong said Chang had just run in the “Color Run” 5K recreational race at Candlestick Park in San Francisco Saturday.
Track teammates were having an easy practice today, and were given the option to not attend practice after hearing about Chang, Leong said.
“I was told she loved running,” he said.
In the accident, Chang was dragged a short distance by the vehicle. She was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, police said.
The driver of the car, identified as Kieran Brewer, 29, (pictured above right) stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI.
