gavel.jpgA man accused of a fatal shooting in San Francisco’s Japantown neighborhood last month pleaded not guilty today to murder charges, a district attorney’s office spokesman said.

Carnell Taylor Jr., 24, is being held on $5 million bail in connection with the shooting of 26-year-old Jamal Gaines at about 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 near Fillmore and Post streets.

Gaines was driving on Post Street when the suspect fired multiple shots at him. He tried to drive away but crashed into a vehicle parked nearby, police said.

Gaines was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Taylor was arrested last Wednesday at about 11 p.m. in the 700 block of Pacific Street on suspicion of the killing, police said.

He was arraigned today on charges of murder, shooting into a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon and gun and gang enhancements, district attorney’s office spokesman Alex Bastian said.

Taylor will return to court on Feb. 19 for a status hearing, Bastian said.
