A homeless man was critically injured when he was beaten during a robbery in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood early Sunday morning, police said today.
The robbery was reported at 3:54 a.m. near Beach and Taylor streets.
The 48-year-old victim was sleeping in an alcove when he was awakened by a man dragging him into the street, according to police.
The suspect smashed the victim’s head into the ground repeatedly until he lost consciousness. When the victim came to, he found that his wallet was missing several items, police said.
The victim’s girlfriend called police, but by the time the officers arrived, the attacker had fled.
The suspect is described as in his mid-30s. He had not been found as of this morning.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of head injuries that are considered life-threatening, police said.
