A 12-inch water main that broke in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood early this morning will take several more hours to repair, according to the city’s Public Utilities Commission.
SFPUC crews responded to a water main rupture on Filbert Street near Mason Street at about 3 a.m. and restored service to customers in the area, utility officials said.
The cast-iron pipe that broke was installed in 1935. The leak was isolated, but SFPUC officials said at 9 a.m. that repairs were expected to last several more hours and will require the closure of a portion of Filbert Street.
Service on San Francisco Municipal Railway’s Powell-Mason cable car line has been interrupted. Buses are taking passengers around the affected area until the scene is cleared.
