The driver of a car that crashed into a power pole and a parked truck in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood following a California Highway Patrol pursuit early this morning fled on foot, a police spokesman said.
The four-door silver BMW crashed near Townsend and Fifth streets after the CHP first reported the chase at 1:53 a.m. at Tehama and Fifth streets, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.
The CHP ended the pursuit shortly afterward, which was when the BMW–occupied only by the driver–crashed into a power pole and unoccupied parked white truck near Townsend and Fifth streets, Shyy said.
The driver then took off on foot, leaving behind the vehicle, Shyy said.
The driver was described as a white man with dark hair and wearing a blue jacket, according to Shyy.
No injuries were reported, but police are investigating the hit-and-run and looking for the at-large driver, Shyy said.
The BMW was not reported stolen by the registered owner, according to Shyy.
Some 2,500 PG&E customers lost power after the crash, utility spokeswoman Jana Morris said.
All but 31 customers had power restored later in the morning, Morris said.
The remaining affected customers are expected to have power back by around noon, Morris said.
