Five people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a man who died after he and a woman were found bound and gagged in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood on Sunday, police said today.
Two suspects, Maelene Lintz, 32, of San Francisco, and Montrail Brackens, 21, of Oakland, were arrested on suspicion of murder, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
The three other suspects, Tyler Miller, 19, Heather Leach, 24, and Maryann Manalastas, 22, were arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to murder, Esparza said. Miller and Leach are both from Hercules, and Manalastas is an Oakland resident.
All five were arrested at a home in Hercules early this morning in connection with the death of Stephen Reid, 26, who was found tied up in the middle of the roadway in the 900 block of Brussels Street at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Esparza said.
Reid and the woman he was found with, who is in her late teens, were taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where Reid later died. Esparza said Reid appeared to have suffered blunt-force trauma and a gunshot wound to his upper body, but the cause of his death remains under investigation.
The woman’s injuries, caused by blunt-force trauma, were initially considered life-threatening but she is now expected to survive, Esparza said today.
Investigators remained tight-lipped today about the motive for the killing. Esparza said the victims and suspects had “an extensive relationship” but declined to elaborate.
He said the investigation is ongoing, and that police are still trying to determine where the victims suffered their injuries and if any other suspects are involved.
“This type of crime is something you see in the movies,” Esparza said. “It’s certainly disturbing when you find a crime of this nature. We’re just grateful we were able to get these five individuals arrested and off the streets.”
