police-light-bar1.jpgA driver failing to yield to a police traffic stop crashed into a building and a fire hydrant causing water to gush into the street in San Francisco’s South of Market district early this morning, according to police.

Police attempted to pull the male driver over for a minor traffic violation when he failed to stop his vehicle and crashed into a fire hydrant and then a building near the intersection of Folsom and Essex Streets at 3:43 a.m.

The suspect was transported to the hospital and taken into custody, police said.

Police are investigating if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.

Water and fire crews are on scene this morning and have closed Essex Street, which is a main access point to the San Francisco Bay Bridge.
