Nine people have been charged with crimes following the San Francisco Giants’ World Series-clinching victory on Sunday night and authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding out who was responsible for other vandalism in the city, District Attorney George Gascon said today.
Police said a total of 36 people were arrested — 23 for felonies in the wake of the Giants’ 4-3, extra-inning game on Sunday that completed a four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers, and Gascon said prosecutors plan on charging more than the nine already charged.
“We expect additional cases, including some of the cases where there has been damage to city vehicles and property around the city,” Gascon said.
Gascon said the behavior by the vandals on Sunday was “inexcusable” and that it would not be tolerated at Wednesday’s parade to celebrate the team.
“If you come tomorrow with the intent to damage property or hurt people, just know that you will end up going to jail if we get you,” he said.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera said his office also plans on seeking civil litigation and monetary restitution against people found to be responsible for damage to city-owned property.
“We won’t just prosecute you criminally, we’re going to go after you where it hurts and make sure the taxpayers of the city and county of San Francisco don’t suffer,” Herrera said.
The nine suspects charged so far include Andrew Fitzsimons for negligent discharge of a firearm, Jaime Avena for assault on an officer with a bottle and Aichieu Saefong for threatening an officer, resisting arrest and throwing bottles at a Muni bus.
Ramona Labat and Aaron Woodford were each charged with misdemeanor assault on an officer and resisting arrest while Brian Irwin faces those charges as well as a count of arson.
Nathan Jusef and Luis Lomeli were each charged with assaulting officers with glass bottles while Thomas Lunsford was charged with robbery after he stole a cellphone from a woman filming the celebration and then punched her friend while trying to flee, prosecutors said.
All nine suspects are expected to be arraigned in San Francisco Superior Court on Wednesday afternoon.
