sfpd_arrestcuffs.jpgA San Francisco man has been arrested in connection with an apparently unprovoked attack on an elderly woman in Chinatown on Saturday, police said today.

James Bartley, 52, is suspected of punching the 94-year-old woman for no apparent reason shortly before 4:45 p.m. Saturday as she crossed the intersection of Stockton and Sacramento streets, according to police.

The woman fell and hit her head, and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that are considered life-threatening, police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said.

The woman remains hospitalized but was showing signs of improvement today, Manfredi said.

Bartley was booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault, battery causing serious injury, elder abuse and criminal threats, police said.
