San Francisco firefighters responded to reports of an explosion and smoke in the station at about 1:45 p.m., a fire department dispatcher said.

The train that experienced the brake problem had to be taken out of service, and trains through San Francisco were halted in both directions for about an hour, a BART dispatcher said.

Civic Center Station had to be evacuated and was closed while the incident was investigated.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries, she said.

San Francisco Municipal Railway service was temporarily disrupted but was back to full service by about 2:45 p.m., Muni spokesman Paul Rose said.

BART trains also returned to full service by about 3 p.m. and were running on time, a dispatcher said.

2:15 PM: BART trains have stopped running through San Francisco this afternoon after an explosion was reported at the Civic Center Station, a fire department dispatcher said.

A BART dispatcher said that a train is experiencing a mechanical problem and that trains were stopped in both directions.

According to an email alert sent by BART at 2:02 PM, “there is a major delay at Civic Center in the SFO, Millbrae and East Bay directions due to an equipment problem on a train.”
