A police officer testified today that a motorist who struck and killed a pedestrian in San Francisco’s Castro District last September was driving with a large walking boot on his right foot.
Gregg Wilcox, 60, faces misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges in a trial that began on Monday and continued this morning with the testimony of Officer Bryan Lujan.
Lujan was one of the officers who responded to the collision, which happened at about 10:40 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2011, at the intersection of Noe and 14th streets.
Wilcox was allegedly making a left turn from southbound Noe Street onto 14th Street when he struck William Cox, 59, who was walking in the crosswalk, prosecutors said. Cox was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he later died.
Lujan testified that Wilcox had stopped his green Ford Explorer at the scene and was “very upset and visibly shaken” following the collision.
Assistant District Attorney Mary Plomin today brought out a large black walking boot that Wilcox was allegedly wearing at the time of the crash.
Prosecutors have said that Wilcox’s doctor advised him not to drive while wearing the boot, and allege that Wilcox was driving using his left foot to press the pedals.
Testimony was expected to continue this afternoon with an emergency medical technician who also responded to the accident.
Wilcox’s defense attorneys declined to speak to reporters about the case today.
