Five people were arrested after a shooting into an occupied vehicle in San Francisco’s Bayview District on Sunday morning, police said.
The shooting was reported at 7:46 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Shafter Avenue and Hawes Street.
Officers responded and found two vehicles with gunshot damage, as well as several people in an apartment nearby who said they had been in one of the vehicles but were not injured, according to police.
The victims said they were leaving the area when they heard gunshots and then saw the glass of their car windows shatter. One of the victims said he saw a car driving up the street with a large gun sticking out of the window just before the shooting, police said.
Investigators learned that suspects had been seen running up a fire escape into an apartment building in the 1100 block of Palou Avenue.
Officers responded and saw the fire escape had been pulled down to the ground, and an officer saw a suspect who is a known gang member leaving the apartment, police said.
The suspect was sweating profusely, and became alarmed when he saw the officers. He was detained, as were four other people in the apartment, according to police.
A search warrant was obtained for the apartment, and officers found a loaded AR-15 assault rifle in a closet that was later determined to be stolen out of Sacramento. Officers also found a loaded rifle magazine and a loaded semi-automatic handgun in a bedroom, police said.
The suspects, whose names have not been released, were all arrested on suspicion of various gun offenses, possession of stolen property and gang enhancements, according to police.
