A man was arrested after apparently accusing a stranger of stealing his credit cards and then hitting the victim in the head with a mallet on San Francisco’s Market Street on Tuesday night, a police spokesman said today.
Hector Waites, 50, of San Francisco, was arrested after the assault was reported at 9:39 p.m. in the 800 block of Market Street, which is near Stockton Street.
The 55-year-old victim told police the suspect approached him and accused him of stealing the credit cards, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
The victim then dropped a bag that he was carrying and a mallet fell out. The suspect picked up the mallet and began chasing the victim, and struck him in the head several times with it, Esparza said.
Responding officers found both the victim and suspect still at the scene. The victim, who said he did not know his attacker, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for injuries, Esparza said. He is expected to survive.
The suspect, identified as Waites, was booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to Esparza.
