12:58 PM: The San Francisco Department of Public Works has closed Great Highway along Ocean Beach because of high winds over the past few days that have blown sand onto the roadway.
DPW spokeswoman Gloria Chan said Great Highway is closed in both directions between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way.
In addition, Chan said, southbound Great Highway is closed between Sloat and Skyline boulevards for the same reason. The northbound lanes remain open along that stretch.
She said the closures will remain in effect until the winds subside enough for cleanup work to proceed.
